At best, arguments about ministerial accountability have been raised with reference to conventions currently existing in the Westminister model of government.

I doubt that any of us seriously expected ministerial resignations on the basis of performance issues.

The issue that I was raising about the GRC team losing is that the Minister together with his team of MPs would have lost their Parliamentary seats. By virtue of the Minister not having his Parliamentary seat, he would not be able to hold on to his Ministerial portfolio.

As for GCT remaining a minister despite Hougang being lost, I don't think comparison is valid. He did not contest Hougang. He was returned unopposed in his constituency. He continues to be a member of Parliament. So, he keeps his seat.

Of course, I would agree that morally speaking, having staked his reputation on Hougang, the residents' collective vote could be seen as a rebuke.Subrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03684598463650484746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23918539.post-4564670561516932412009-06-24T10:32:41.918-07:002009-06-24T10:32:41.918-07:00"The practice of having a Minister head a GRC..."The practice of having a Minister head a GRC team places an apprehension in the minds of voters that if the team loses, the Minister would no longer be able to serve in his office."

Are you kidding me ? When Woody promised to upgrade Hougang with $100 millions and he lost, did he step down ? No , in fact he continue his elite of losing billions when his MAS under him did not do his job of financial regulation, giving excuses here and there.

The myths of Singapore ministers must step down due to moral responsibility and accountability has long been squashed. Look at billions lost of reserves, and no surprise, no one and not even the ant are responsible.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23918539.post-4046395529434414162009-06-24T08:33:23.399-07:002009-06-24T08:33:23.399-07:00The Men-in-white are wiley arent they?
It is not ...The Men-in-white are wiley arent they?

It is not the whole truth when they claim that the people want more opposition voices in parliament.

What the voters really want is to have representatives to BLOCK those in power from doing whatever they want. That includes changing the laws to suit their whims and also stripping the people of whatever is left of their rights.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23918539.post-30990027450724924222009-06-24T00:20:46.154-07:002009-06-24T00:20:46.154-07:00if you guys are interested the aceproject website ...if you guys are interested the aceproject website is a useful resource on electoral systems around the world.
I got some of my data from the following article:
http://aceproject.org/ace-en/topics/bd/bdy/bdy_sg/?searchterm=singaporeSubrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03684598463650484746noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23918539.post-42423974764646026062009-06-23T00:09:48.247-07:002009-06-23T00:09:48.247-07:00Excellent work, Subra.
